Laser skin resurfacing, a type of laser surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that can dramatically improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars and hyper pigmentation.
At High Point Plastic Surgery, we offer laser surgery to treat:
Melasma (sun spots or age spots)
Pigmentation and pigmented lesions
Scars caused by surgery
Uneven skin tone
Wrinkles and fine lines
Dr. Jason Cooper can incorporate laser surgery with cosmetic surgery to achieve optimal results with minimal additional downtime.
How Laser Skin Resurfacing Works
Laser skin resurfacing uses laser light to target superficial and deep layers of the skin. At High Point Plastic Surgery we use the Lumenis Ultrapulse Encore CO2 laser, which can dramatically reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, age spots, sun spots and other skin imperfections in as little as one treatment.
Ablative full-field laser treatments tighten collagen within the deeper layers of the skin’s dermis. This is an extremely powerful technique that effectively erases deep wrinkles and smooths the skin without the need for a surgical procedure to remove skin.
Fractional laser treatments target large or small areas of skin where damage has occurred. When the laser beam is used in the fractional mode small portions of the surrounding skin remain untouched. This facilitates more rapid healing and results in a shorter recovery time. Typically fractional laser treatments are performed as a series of 3 to 6 treatments where full field “total” resurfacing is performed in a single treatment.
Speaking from Experience
“I like performing laser for many different indications. My favorite application of the laser is to improve the appearance of the aging face. I use an ablative fractional CO2 laser for resurfacing purposes in order to smooth the skin and remove fine lines and wrinkles. The laser I use can also lighten dark pigmentation spots. I find it really gratifying to use the laser to put the finishing touches on a surgical procedure. I use it like polish on a new car. Our ablative laser allows the patient’s skin to glow by removing minor blemishes, brown spots and wrinkles. The application of laser technology in our practice has led to better results for our patients.”
You may not be a candidate for laser skin resurfacing if you:
Take anticoagulant medications
Have taken Accutane, an acne medication, in the last year
Are unable to follow the post-treatment care regime recommended by your surgeon
What to Expect at Your Appointment
At your first appointment, Dr. Cooper will conduct a clinical examination to assess your skin type and ask you about your medical history and goals for treatment.
Next, Dr. Cooper will work with you to develop a personalized plan to help you achieve your desired outcome. Many people achieve their desired result after just one treatment, though you may need a series of treatments to achieve your desired goals.
The settings (depth of treatment, density of coverage, overall treatment area) associated with your specific treatment will dictate the amount of downtime you can expect to experience.
Prior to treatment, Dr. Cooper will anesthetize the treatment area with a topical numbing cream to minimize discomfort. Individual treatments typically take 15-45 minutes.
A Zimmer Cryo 6 chiller will be used during your treatment to numb the skin which will significantly minimize pain during your treatment.
After the treatment, your skin will be very sensitive. You may experience swelling and redness similar to a mild sunburn for several days. Skin peeling or flaking also may occur, as well as skin “weeping” or crusting.
Our staff at High Point Plastic Surgery will give you detailed instructions to take care of your skin. It is important that you follow these instructions carefully.
Your surgeon also may recommend a special skin care regimen both before and after treatment to enhance your results.
