Speaking from Experience
“If cut, color, and clarity are the essential components of evaluating a diamond, then, facial skeletal structure, skin pigmentation and appearance, location of fat compartments, and hairstyle are key to assessing what techniques and incision pattern are needed for a facelift.”
What Is a Facelift?
A facelift is a surgical procedure that restores a youthful look to the cheeks, jaw line, and neck by elevating underlying tissues and tightening lax skin. Outdated methods that focused on stretching the skin laterally have been replaced by surgical approaches such as the SMAS technique, which go deeper and reposition tissues vertically. Newer approaches also address the loss of facial volume as a key component of a facelift.
Most patients considering a facelift are concerned about one or more of the following conditions:
- Cheeks that look sunken or flat
- Jowls and sagging skin around the chin and neck
- Deep creases running from the nose to corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds)
Customizing Your Facelift Procedure
Dr. Jason Cooper frequently performs the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) facelift, which repositions the tissues of the mid-plane of the face. It restores the descending cheek fat to its more youthful position overlying the cheekbone, and creates a softer, more natural look in the mid-face area. The skin is also redraped naturally, not pulled tight as with past techniques.
Although Dr. Jason Cooper addresses volume loss with SMAS repositioning, he is careful to avoid results that look overfilled. He may recommend a non-permanent filler in areas where needed, either during or following surgery, to avoid unnatural looking results.
Dr. Cooper’s attention to detail when he creates a surgical plan for your facelift even encompasses your hair style, thickness and color for optimal camouflaging of incisions. Incisions are generally made within and around the ear where they are well-concealed.
For those with earlier signs of aging, Dr. Jason Cooper may recommend a mini-facelift.
There is a reason Dr. Jason Cooper is regarded as one of South Florida’s premier plastic surgeons; the consistently beautiful results that only a specialist with his experience and training can get.
What to Expect After a Facelift
Recovery following a facelift varies from patient to patient. Dr. Jason Cooper provides detailed post-operative instructions to help you throughout the recovery process. While each patient recovers at his or her own pace, there are some general guidelines to keep in mind:
Immediately after surgery: Bandages should be kept in place as instructed. Reclining helps minimize swelling and discomfort, although it’s important to keep your head elevated. Avoid bending forward. Pain relief medication prescribed by Dr. Jason Cooper typically controls the mild to moderate discomfort associated with facelift recuperation. Bruising and swelling are usually worst in the first 2 days.
First week after surgery: You’ll have a follow-up appointment during which bandages and drains, if used, are usually removed. Cool compresses applied to the eyes (but not the cheeks) are helpful for some patients. It’s important to move around while at home to promote circulation and healing and decrease swelling. Most patients can return to work 10 days to 2 weeks after surgery, and even more quickly after a mini-facelift.
First few weeks after surgery: Expect scars to appear red, then pink; they will ultimately fade to almost undetectable after several months. Avoid direct sunlight on your face by wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Exercise should be limited to light activity.
Although the recovery from a full facelift takes a bit longer than other, less invasive procedures, the results generally last for many years. Expect the full results of your facelift to take up to 6 months to appear.
