Speaking From Experience
“Thigh lift can alleviate both physical and emotional discomfort for individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight. Careful skin excision, along with tissue repositioning, can produce aesthetically beautiful results that studies show help patients to maintain their weight loss.”
What Is a Thigh Lift?
Thigh lift surgery is performed to firm and tighten the inner or outer thighs by removing excess skin and fat, and elevating the remaining tissues. It may be combined with liposuction or other body contouring procedures for individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight. Dr. Cooper discusses the options at your consultation. In general, good candidates for a thigh lift have one or more of the following characteristics:
- Have maintained a stable weight for 3 to 6 months prior to surgery
- Experience discomfort and chafing caused by sagging, redundant skin
- No underlying health conditions that would increase the risk of complications following surgery
Customizing Your Procedure
You and Dr. Cooper will determine the best approach once you’ve discussed your goals and he’s performed a physical examination. If you have lost a significant amount of weight, Dr. Cooper may recommend other procedures, such as a lower body lift, to address your aesthetic concerns. For patients who are good candidates for a thigh lift, Dr. Cooper evaluates whether an inner or outer lift is needed.
There is a reason Dr. Jason Cooper is regarded as one of South Florida’s premier plastic surgeons; the consistently beautiful results that only a specialist with his experience and training can get.
What to Expect
The contoured thighs that result from a thigh lift are immediately noticeable. Dr. Cooper explains during the consultation that incisions made to perform the surgery will usually result in visible scars, especially for an outer thigh lift, but he makes every effort to camouflage them in natural skin folds. Each patient’s recovery will be different and it’s important to follow the detailed postoperative instructions provided by Dr. Cooper to help you heal as quickly and comfortably as possible. Some general guidelines regarding recovery from a thigh lift include:
Immediately after surgery: Depending on the extent of your procedure, you may be discharged into the care of a loved one after the general anesthesia wears off. You will likely be dressed in bandages and a surgical compression garment that promotes optimal healing and results. You are encouraged to walk around periodically to promote circulation. Dr. Cooper will prescribe prescription pain medication to manage your discomfort after surgery.
First week after surgery: Make sure you have someone who can stay at your home for a day or two. Some bruising and swelling are normal, and these will be largely resolved after 2 weeks. You will meet with Dr. Cooper on the day following your surgery, and again after about a week. You will continue to wear the compression garment until he tells you otherwise.
First weeks after surgery: It is generally 2 weeks before you can resume much activity or return to work. You will continue to wear the compression garment as directed by Dr. Cooper and you can resume driving when you are no longer taking prescription pain relief medication. Avoid any bending or activity that puts stress on the surgical incisions. Most patients are completely recovered after 6 to 8 weeks, but periodic swelling may continue for several months.
