“I consider the entire body, even when I’m only operating on the breasts or abdomen. I always try to maintain anatomic body relationships because I want my patients to look like better versions of themselves after surgery, and to keep them from having a ‘surgical’ look.” WHY CHOOSE DR. COOPER
What Is a Mommy Makeover?
Pregnancy takes a toll on a woman’s body in the form of deflated and sagging breasts, stretched abdominal skin and muscles, and residual fat. The procedures Dr. Cooper performs to address these concerns during a mommy makeover typically include:
Combining the procedures in a single operation is an approach that is both safe and cost-effective for the patient. Another appealing feature for moms is that they achieve comprehensive results without multiple recovery periods.
Customizing Your Procedure
Not every woman’s body responds to pregnancy and breastfeeding in the same way, so Dr. Cooper customizes these procedures on a case-by-case basis. The goals of a mommy makeover vary and typically depend on the scope and degree of changes to the breasts and abdomen. Dr. Cooper listens closely to what you want to achieve through a mommy makeover and then explains the procedures he can combine to meet those goals. In most mommy makeover procedures, Dr. Cooper removes excess breast skin and lifts and reshapes the existing tissue and repositions the nipples and areolae so they sit higher. If you want larger breasts or more fullness in the upper portion of the breasts, breast augmentation using saline or silicone breast implants will be part of the procedure. For a flatter abdomen that is proportional to the rest of your body, Dr. Cooper performs a mini or a full tummy tuck. For those with skin excess limited to the lower abdomen, he may be able to perform a limited-incision or mini-tummy tuck. For those who require muscle repair and more skin removal, Dr. Cooper will perform a full tummy tuck, which can also improve the definition of the hips and waist. Dr. Cooper makes the incision for a tummy tuck low in the pubic area, and a full tummy tuck also requires an incision around the navel. Liposuction is often incorporated into a tummy tuck to smooth areas around the abdomen, waist, and flanks. Some women also opt for liposuction of their hips, thighs, or buttocks at the time of their mommy makeover.
What to Expect
One of the benefits of combining procedures in a mommy makeover is that there is a single recovery period. The length of recovery depends on the procedures Dr. Cooper combines – a factor which varies for each patient. A full recovery following a tummy tuck combined with breast enhancement can take up to several months. Dr. Cooper provides detailed postoperative instructions to help patients heal as quickly and comfortably as possible. Here are some general guidelines regarding your recovery: Immediately after surgery: A friend or loved one can drive you home after you recover from the general anesthesia. You will likely be wearing surgical support garments, bandages, and have drains in your abdomen. Prescription pain relief medication can minimize your discomfort. First week after surgery: You will need to have help around the house, especially if you have young children. Bruising, swelling, and soreness will probably increase during the first several days of recovery before beginning to taper. Walking around is important to help your circulation, although you will not be able to walk upright for a few days after a tummy tuck. You will likely have a follow-up appointment the day after surgery, and about a week after surgery. Most women can have their drains removed within the first week. First several weeks after surgery: A full recovery from a tummy tuck takes longer than recovering from cosmetic breast surgery. Although most patients begin feeling like they can resume their normal daily activities about 10 days after surgery, it’s important to avoid trying to do too much.
